There is no one way (or one correct way) to set writing goals and track your progress. Well, there are writing contracts, which do a good job of telling you when you have to finish, but I’m talking the general writing goals writers set. Some people set goals over length, some by time. Robert Parker used to write four pages a day of his Spenser WIPs, no more, no less. Some people set aside chunks of time and get whatever writing done they can during that time. I used to just write whenever the muse struck, which meant I would have furious periods of creative writing followed by long periods of inactivity, and then I professionalized (thanks to the dissertation process) and set goals of 1,000 words a day, 10,000…
